To Repair or To Replace Your AC? That Is the Question.

Technician repairing an air conditionerHave you noticed that the air conditioning system you have installed in your home has been struggling this summer? Maybe you’re having a hard time keeping your home as cool as you’d like. Or, maybe you’ve noticed that your energy bills are skyrocketing for no apparent reason. If you’re concerned that your AC system isn’t operating up to par, you might be wondering if it’s time for repairs – or a replacement.

At Family Danz, it’s important to us that we share with you the information you need to make an informed decision. We never take your home comfort lightly – we strive to ensure that you and your family are always comfortable, energy-efficient and safe. So, when it comes time to consider replacing the air conditioning system in your home, there are a few telltale signs that a new installation may be the right choice.

Five Signs You May Need to Replace Your AC

  1. Your air conditioning system has needed frequent, expensive repairs. This is perhaps the strongest indicator that you likely should consider replacing your system. If you need to repair your system often, and those repairs come with a high price tag, it probably will be more cost-effective for you to replace your system.
  2. Your AC is more than 10 years old and/or uses an obsolete refrigerant. The older your air conditioning system is, the more likely it will be less efficient, and need repairs. As AC systems move past 10 years, the likelihood they will need to be replaced becomes higher. And, older systems that use obsolete refrigerants, like Freon, are more expensive to repair and maintain.
  3. Your utility bills have been on the rise. Of course, we can expect that the cost of utilities is going to increase a bit year over year. But if your utilities have risen and energy costs aren’t the factor, it’s likely your AC system is working harder than it should be to keep your home cool.
  4. Your home is simply not as cool and comfortable as you’d like. If you’ve noticed a marked change in the level of comfort of your home over the past couple of years, it’s likely your system is simply not operating efficiently and effectively. This is especially important to note if you’ve regularly maintained your system. (Incidentally, if you haven’t, you might want to call for maintenance, as a dirty system could be the problem.)
  5. You have made changes to the size of your home. Many people don’t realize that if they add square footage to their home, they may also need to make changes to their home comfort system. Additions, or using spaces in your home that previously were not inhabited (like a converted garage or finished basement) may mean you need to replace your AC system or enhance your system with a ductless unit in that space.

Not sure if you should repair or replace? Family Danz can help.

If you have questions about your air conditioning system, and would like to know whether you need a repair or a replacement, Family Danz can help. We can determine if your current system still has life in it, or if you should be thinking about installing a new system. From there, we’ll work with you for the best possible solutions.

Today’s World Calls for Better Indoor Air Quality

In today’s world, people are concerned about the air they are breathing every day. With people spending more time indoors than ever due to the pandemic, many homeowners are trying to find ways to improve the air they breathe. What many people don’t realize is, their HVAC contractor can help! At Family Danz, we offer many solutions for people who want and need better indoor air, but we understand that sometimes it can be confusing. In this article, we’ll explain the different indoor air quality products available, and let you know how we can help.

Indoor Air Quality Products That Can Help You Breathe Easierbanner advertising indoor air quality products and services outlined in the page content

  • Air Cleaners: There is a variety of different types of air cleaners on the market today. Some provide targeted air cleaning on a room-by-room basis, while others, also known as whole-house systems, can be installed directly in your home’s HVAC system. Obviously, a whole-house system offers superior control because your air is cleaned as it passes through your cooling and heating system. And, these types of air cleaners reduce particulates like pollen, dust, pet dander, and some bacteria and viruses, making them ideal for those suffering from allergies or other respiratory concerns.
  • Filtration: Air filters are an important measure in improving your home’s indoor air quality. Not only can changing out your filters help keep airborne particulates at bay, it can also help your equipment run more efficiently. Why? Think of it this way – if your filter is clogged, your system has to work that much harder to move conditioned air throughout your home. And changing the filters is a relatively simple, DIY task for most homeowners. Of course, if you’re not comfortable changing your filter, Family Danz can certainly help.
  • Duct Cleaning: Over time, dirt and debris, as well as more unsavory contaminants like insects and rodent droppings, can gather in your home’s ductwork system. That’s why it’s a good idea to consider having your ductwork cleaned by the professionals at Family Danz. We use a high-powered vacuum system that thoroughly removes any particulates from your ductwork, eliminating the pollutants that contaminate the air you breathe. That helps to ensure that the indoor air quality in your home is the best that it can be.

Comfort + Improved Indoor Air Quality = Ductless

Woman sitting on couch next to a wall-mounted ductless unit

If you’d like to better home comfort combined with improved indoor air quality, you should know that ductless cooling can be an excellent option. There are many benefits to choosing a ductless system for your home, with precise comfort control at the forefront. Of course, you’d expect better comfort when you install a new cooling system, but you might not be aware of the other improvements your home will experience when you choose a new ductless system.

Who can benefit from a new ductless system in their home?

To learn more, contact us today

Call Family Danz at (518) 427-8685 or complete our online form here:

The short answer is, ductless is a great solution for most homeowners. But for some, ductless cooling is an incredible choice. Homeowners who have limited space for ductwork, use radiant heat, or would like to add comfort control to an addition, finished basement, or converted attic or garage can enjoy cool comfort that may not be as easy to enjoy otherwise. That’s because ductwork is not required, and only minimal construction is needed, for a ductless system installation. No more noisy window fans or extensive construction projects – a new ductless system can be installed quickly and fairly easily, so you and your family will be enjoying improved comfort in no time.

What do you mean when you say, “improved indoor air quality”?

Ductless cooling not only offers better home comfort; it also provides advanced filtration. That means that the air circulating around your home via a ductless system goes through a multi-stage filtration system that decreases particles and contaminants in the air – some of which include dust, allergens, pollen, bacteria and some viruses. That makes ductless air conditioning beneficial for those with allergies or respiratory concerns, or who just want cleaner indoor air.

What other benefits will ductless cooling provide me?

The reasons to choose ductless don’t stop at better cooling and filtration. A ductless cooling system can also offer you:

  • Improved energy efficiency via heat pump technology;
  • Precise comfort control via an easy-to-use remote control;
  • Quiet operation, unlike noisy window AC units;
  • Non-obtrusive comfort, as these systems generally are installed high on walls or in ceilings;
  • Heating during the cooler months, as many ductless systems are capable of both cooling and heating;
  • Zoned comfort control that can help you enjoy premium comfort and efficiency.

Ductless cooling sounds like the right choice for me. How can I learn more?

At Family Danz, we proudly offer our customers advanced ductless systems and professional installation that will have you and your family enjoying cool comfort – and improved indoor air quality – in no time!

Just give us a call at (518) 427-8685 and we’ll be glad to help you with your needs.

FAQ – How We’re Handling Things During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Ensuring the health and safety of our customers and our employees remains our top priority. We continue to focus on providing essential customer services, and we want to address the most common questions that many of you have right now.

Are you providing services right now?
Yes. Heating and cooling contractors have been deemed essential by state government. If you need any services, please contact us at (518) 427-8685.

What hours and days are you working?

  • 24hr emergency service
  • 8am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday
  • Closed Saturday and Sunday

Is it safe to let your employees in my house?
The safety of our employees and our customers is definitely our highest priority, and diligence will be of paramount importance during these difficult times. We are paying close attention to updates from the CDC, the World Health Organization, and local health officials. We have also been proactively implementing internal procedures and protocols to ensure the health and well-being of our employees and customers.

  • We are following strict CDC and health department guidelines. As such, we require all service technicians to be equipped with the following personal protective equipment when entering homes or businesses:
    • Masks
    • Gloves
    • Shoe Covers
  • All service technicians are following best practices for prevention of viral transmission:
    • No personal contact, including handshakes
    • No passing of any object without it being sanitized or handled with gloves
    • We’re practicing social distancing of at least 6 feet on the job
  • If an employee is experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and fever, we are mandating they stay home for 14 days, or seek medical attention consistent with CDC and WHO guidelines. Should there be concerns about any employee, please contact us at (518) 427-8685.
  • For the safety of our employees and customers, our Customer Relations team check with you beforehand to confirm that no occupants at a customer’s residence or business is experiencing any symptoms and to re-confirm we have authorization to enter and service the property.
  • We will postpone service if we encounter any situations where symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and fever are present.

Do you provide air purification products and do they help?
Yes. We have access to indoor air quality products, including those that use ultraviolet light to eliminate bacteria, mold, allergens, and viruses that are currently being recirculated through the air. Follow this link for more information on how we can improve the air quality in your home.

Also, something as simple as having us replace your filter can help reduce these unwanted contaminants too. Indoor Air Quality products are affordable, they can be very quickly installed in your existing ductwork, and they’re what many of our customers are asking for right now. We’re working with manufacturers to make sure we are well stocked to meet our customers’ needs.

One other thing to consider is that allergy season is almost here. Any breathing difficulties, sneezing, or stuffiness right now right now could be a source of great worry and uncertainty for some customers, which in turn could result in an unnecessary and potentially risky trip for medical testing. Air quality products can help customers avoid these kind of difficult decisions right now, by reducing in-home contaminants. We want to help.

What else can I be doing now with my AC or heating system to prepare?
AC system failure during the hottest months could be not only inconvenient, but also potentially dangerous for some. It’s also something that’s often avoidable. If it’s been a few years since your AC had a tune up, system inspection and safety check, it may be time to consider having this done now before the hot weather arrives. Preventative maintenance can help you avoid a system breakdown by identifying problems before it’s too late. We’re available to do system inspections, and our technicians are adhering to CDC guidelines to ensure safety – both for their families and yours. You can feel confident when you allow our team into your home, and for many conventional air conditioning systems, we won’t have to enter your home at all.

What should I do if my heating or air conditioning breaks?
If your heating or cooling system isn’t working properly, let us know. We’ll give our customers priority service, especially if you’re at greater risk due to age or underlying health conditions. If you need help, we can be there, and as always, we’ll do everything possible to get your  system running again quickly.

And while we understand that nobody is focused on a replacing a system that doesn’t need  replacing right now, if your system can’t be repaired, or if you need a replacement, right now know that many of our manufacturers are offering discounts and incentives, and we can pass those savings and options along to you.

“March” Into Getting Your Home Ready for Spring

Even though Old Man Winter has been hanging around for a while now, before you know it spring will arrive and (hopefully) so will the return to warmer weather. March is a great time to start preparing your home for the spring season ahead, so that once those nice days return, you’ll have time to spend outdoors enjoying the milder temperatures.

Winter can last for a long time in our part of the country, and with many of us having central, forced-air heating in our homes, it’s always a good idea to get ready for spring by giving our house a good interior cleaning. Dusting, washing curtains, and deep-cleaning carpets and flooring can help get rid of dust, dirt and grime that’s settled in over the winter months. Wiping down the walls and ushering out the dust bunnies that might have gathered in corners and under furniture is a good idea, too.

But besides a good spring cleaning, what else can you do to prepare your home for milder days ahead? In addition to an interior cleaning, here are a few more ideas that can help get your home ready for spring.

Click for full size infographic, or read on below.

five ways to get ready for spring from family danz

Five Ways to Get Your Home Ready for Spring

    1. Get your patio ready for outdoor fun. Clear it of any leaves, twigs or debris that might have collected there over the winter. It’s also a good time to give your patio furniture a good cleaning, and make sure your grill is ready for those warm-weather cookouts.
    2. Clean out your gutters. Gutters can be a collection point for leaves, pine needles, debris and other gunk over the winter months. Remove as much as you can with gloved hands, and then hose out anything remaining. (You will want a helper for this task. If you’re not comfortable on a ladder, hire a professional to help – your safety is most important!)
    3. Wash your windows. Washing your windows inside and out eliminates any dust and dirt that has gathered there over the winter, and literally lets the sunshine in!
    4. Change out your lightbulbs. As the landscape around us starts to get greener, so can your home! Taking some simple steps like replacing old incandescent bulbs with higher-efficiency LEDs can help you save energy, and keep the planet green.
    5. Call your HVAC company for spring maintenance. There are many reasons why it’s always a good idea to have your air conditioning checked out in the spring, the main one being assurance that it will work properly once the heat of summer hits. Not to mention, maintenance will help it run more efficiently, last longer, and keep your warranty valid.

Trust Family Danz for the spring AC maintenance you need.

You can check air conditioning maintenance off your spring-cleaning to-do list by giving Family Danz a call. We’ll get your maintenance appointment scheduled so your AC system won’t miss a beat once the warm weather arrives. Simply give us a call at 518.427.8685 and we’ll be happy to assist you.

COVID-19: How We’re Handling the Crisis

Microscopic view of a virusCOVID-19, or the coronavirus as it’s more commonly called, is rapidly moving and is affecting our daily lives more and more each passing day.  While most people who contract the virus will survive it, for some, like the elderly and those with compromised immune systems, it can be deadly. That’s why we’re taking every possible measure to keep our customers and our team safe.

As HVAC contractors, Family Danz knows how important it is to keep home and business environments safe and comfortable. We’re taking every measure possible to ensure our workforce is healthy, and our workplace is safe for our employees. While we’ve always taken measures to ensure that our employees practice appropriate sanitary and health measures, in light of COVID-19 we have put some additional practices in place.

    Our Workforce

We have requested that anyone who is feeling ill at all not report to work. That way, we can rest assured that those on our team avoid health risks and possible sickness. But more importantly, this measure is in place to ensure that you, our valued customer, are not exposed in any way to illness. While this is not much different than how we do business normally, we are asking employees that have any symptoms of COVID-19 to stay at home for 14 days. As always, our customers and our employees are like family to us.

    Our Customers

As we’ve said above, we’re taking every possible measure with our team to ensure that the spread of illness is contained. We’d also ask at this time that our customers who may be experiencing COVID-19 symptoms inform us before we come into your home. So, please let us know if anyone in your household has symptoms of, or has tested positive for, coronavirus prior to your appointment. Keeping you comfortable is important to us; however, we also need to put practices in place that keep our employees safe as well.

Get Smart In 2020: Five Reasons You Need A Smart Thermostat

Woman adjusting a smart thermostat through her phoneOver the past couple of decades, technology has taken us to places we could only ever imagine. Who would have guessed most of us would be carrying around a tiny device that would work as a computer, phone and camera, all the time? Or that we’d be talking to our artificial intelligence friends, Siri and Alexa, on a daily basis? The world of home comfort has also joined the smart home bandwagon, offering smart thermostats that change the way we heat and cool our homes.

Smart thermostats like ecobee and Nest are leading the way in home comfort innovation, as well as specialized smart thermostats that work seamlessly with certain brands of equipment, such as the Bryant Evolution™ Connex™ thermostat. How can a smart thermostat benefit you and your family? Here are five ways you might not have considered.

    Five Reasons to Get Smart

    1. More control over your home’s heating and cooling systems. With a smart thermostat, you can precisely control your heating and cooling systems, so that you get optimal comfort in the spaces you occupy the most. And, many smart thermostats “learn” the habits of you and your family, so temperatures can change based on activities, such as at home, away, or sleeping.
    2. Better efficiency. Because you’ll have better control over your home comfort systems, they’ll operate more efficiently. Because these systems “know” when you’re occupying a space, not home, or sleeping, they’ll automatically adjust comfort levels, which will help save energy – and money on your utility bills.
    3. Simple to use. Unlike programmable thermostats of the past, which can be a little complex to program, smart thermostats are, like the name suggests, intuitive and do most of the programming work for you. And because many are easy to access via smart phone, you’ll have access to them at your fingertips.
    4. Control from wherever, whenever. Like we said above, there’s an app for that – your smart thermostat, that is. That means you’ll be able to control your system from your smart phone, laptop or desktop computer, whether you’re home or not. You’ll also be alerted to any issues with your home comfort system, so you can take care of any problems right away, before they become larger, more expensive ones.
    5. Connectivity with other smart devices. Many smart thermostats work with your home’s other smart devices, providing you with easier, more automated living. Some smart thermostats even connect to your virtual home assistant, so you can easily ask your device to turn up the heat or air conditioning, or turn it down.

Where can I find a smart thermostat for my home?

That one’s easy! Just contact Family Danz and we will be more than happy to help you learn more about smart thermostats. What’s more, we’ll help you find the right one for your home, and install it for you too! Simply give us a call at 518.427.8685 and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Five Ways You Can Save Energy This Year

Couple holding a small model of a homeWhen the winter months arrive, we tend to take notice of how we use energy in our homes a bit more. Keeping your home warm can be expensive, and with a good portion of your utility budget going to heating, you may be looking for ways to decrease your energy use. Fortunately, there are many simple steps you can take that help conserve energy in your home. While they may seem like small steps, they add up – helping you save money this winter, and all year long.

Want better energy efficiency? Here are five things you can do today to start saving!

    1. Unplug It. Not using a small appliance, phone charger, or battery charger? Then unplug it. It might not seem like a huge step to take in energy conservation, but it makes a difference. All of these items continue to sap energy, even when they’re not being used. You might be surprised to learn average homeowners can save 10 percent annually on energy bills, just by taking the time to unplug items when not in use.
    2. Go LED. Choosing efficient LED bulbs over incandescent bulbs not only helps you conserve energy (incidentally, LEDs use up to 75 percent less). It also helps you save on the cost of lightbulb replacement in the long run, because LED bulbs last much longer than incandescents – up to 50 times longer! When you consider the average home has 40+ fixtures, making the switch will definitely pay for itself in the long run.
    3. Mind the Gaps. Do you have drafts around your doors and windows? These small gaps let the heated air outside – and lets the cold air in, making your heating system have to work harder to keep your home toasty. Sealing the gaps is a fairly simple, inexpensive DIY fix, and can save energy – and save unnecessary wear and tear on your equipment, because it doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your home comfortable.
    4. Turn it Down. Your thermostat, that is. If you remember to turn it down just a couple of degrees when you aren’t home, it can help you save energy. And, dropping it by 10 degrees (for instance, from 72ºF to 62ºF can save up to 15 percent every year. To make it even easier, consider installing a programmable thermostat that you can set to run at different temperatures throughout the day, or investing in a smart thermostat that “learns” your family’s habits!
    5. Tune it Up. Yes, you’ve heard us say it before, but we’ll say it again – making sure you get your annual heating system maintenance is one of the most important ways you can save energy. Yearly tune-ups help your equipment stay efficient, and can keep your system from breaking down before its time – saving you on expensive repair or replacement costs.

Seven Steps for Setting a Casual Thanksgiving Table

Silverware on a tableWhether you’re inviting over your closest friends for Friendsgiving this year, or want to create an inviting, yet chaos-free table for your family Thanksgiving, keeping it simple is best for stress-free festivities. We’re offering seven steps for creating easy but elegant place settings courtesy of Grateful, as well as providing a few tips on how you can keep it easy but still create a beautiful space for your holiday meal.

Seven Steps to Create a Perfect Place Setting

    1. At each place at the table, center your charger and place the dinner plate on top.
    2. Place the dinner fork to the left of the charger.
    3. Place the napkin to the left of the dinner fork.
    4. To the right of the charger, place the knife first by the plate, and then the soup spoon.
    5. At the top of the charger, place the dessert fork, and then the dessert spoon.
    6. Place the water glass directly above the knife and soup spoon.
    7. Place the wine or juice glass just below the water glass, a bit to the left.

Decorate your table with pops of color.

Is your tableware a solid color? Then you can easily decorate with bursts of fall color here and there. Choose a brightly colored table runner and a bold centerpiece, and color-coordinate your napkins around it. You can go au naturel with your setting, choosing leaves, gourds, pinecones and twigs. Or go bold with taper candles surrounded by baubles in shades of red, orange and yellow, or a modern floral display. Make it your own!

And, you can make sure your home is ready for the holidays with Family Danz.
