The weather changes from warm to cool and back again can wreak havoc with some people’s sinuses. The leaves that look so beautiful on the trees can turn into damp piles of mold-growing matter once on the ground. And, there are some fall plants like goldenrod that are in full bloom and sending their nefarious pollen into the air.

5 Steps You Can Take to Keep Allergens at Bay in Your Home

Obviously, there is very little you can do to control the outdoor air. But there are a few measures you can take to ensure that the indoor air in your home is as allergen-free as possible. Below are five steps you can take to cut down on those allergy-inducing culprits – and enjoy cleaner, fresher indoor air in the process.

  1. Keep windows closed during high-pollen days. If you’re an allergy sufferer, keeping those windows shut can help mitigate pollen entering your home.
  1. Remove shoes/outerwear before entering the house. Leaving your jacket and shoes out of your living space can help keep allergens you pick up outside out of your home.
  1. Vacuum more often. Pollen and allergens can settle into carpets. So, vacuum more often during the times when your allergies tend to flare.
  1. Install a clean filter in your HVAC system. Over time, your filter can become clogged with particulates – and send those allergens circulating through your home.
  1. Consider an air cleaning system for your home. Your HVAC dealer can recommend and install indoor air quality products that can help improve your indoor air quality.

Naval History in Albany – the USS Slater

USS_Slater_AlbanyWhen you live in Albany, NY or the surrounding area, you know our city is rich in history. Our museums and buildings house some of the world’s most comprehensive collections of historical artifacts, and you can easily spend a day simply touring the Capital here. But did you know Albany is also home to the last destroyer escort afloat in America?

The USS Slater was a Cannon Class destroyer escort that was served in the United States Navy during World War II. Like many ships of that time, the USS Slater was named for a sailor who lost his life in service – Frank O. Slater, who perished aboard the USS San Francisco during the 1942 Battle of Guadalcanal. The USS Slater served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific theaters both during and immediately following the war, and in 1951 was transferred to Greece. It served for 40 years, and was deactivated in 1991.

While it was awaiting disposal, the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association saved it. Raising $290,000 to rescue the USS Slater and return it to the United States, the not-for-profit educational corporation was brought to New York City, and four years later it made its way up the Hudson River to Albany, NY. Over the last 20 years, volunteer crews have worked to restore the USS Slater to her 1945 condition. The USS Slater now serves as a living memorial to destroyer escorts and the sailors who served on them.

If you’d like to visit the USS Slater, she is open early April through late November, Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During months of operation, she is open most major holidays except Easter and Thanksgiving Day. Admission prices vary, please visit the USS Slater website to learn more.
