One of the top concerns is making sure your water pipes don‘t freeze, because as they freeze the ice expands and can burst the copper or plastic of the piping. Turn on your faucets so hot water drips slowly but steadily, about once per second, to keep the water inside flowing and help prevent the buildup of ice. Cabinet doors under your sinks should be opened to allow warm air to flow to the pipes. Place a towel between the outside wall and your pipes to protect them from the cold. Insulate any pipes that are not already weather-protected by wrapping them in towels, newspaper, or fiberglass.
Make sure any cracks under your doors are covered with towels or blankets to help keep the heat inside the home, and close any open curtains. Fire up any alternate source of heat, like an electric heater, fireplace, or even the oven. And enjoy some family bonding time by keeping everybody bundled together in a warm area of the house.
