Giving Your Air Conditioning a Helping Hand

Hot enough for you?

If the temperature around Troy and the Capital District of New York State is getting a little bit too hot for you, and your air conditioning system just isn’t doing enough to keep you as cool as you’d like to be, you might want to take a look around your abode or office to make sure you don’t have places of energy loss. There are simple adjustments you can do yourself, with just a little coaching from the experts at Family Danz Heating & Cooling, to make sure your AC is running to its maximum efficiency.

First of all, if you haven’t already, it’s never too late to have your air conditioning system checked over by one of our experienced service technicians. We will make sure it is running to its peak potential, and assure your energy dollars are spent well, while also making sure it is as safe as possible. That’s priceless all by itself.

One of the easiest things to do yourself is to change any filters in your air conditioning system regularly to make sure they are constantly clean and free from any obstructions. Dirt in the filters will inhibit the air flow, and the more the unit needs to push, the more wear and tear is placed on the motor. Plus your energy bills will go up needlessly.

Also make sure the air conditioner’s cooling coils are kept clean. You can consult your owner’s manual on the proper techniques for your particular model, or ask your friendly Family Danz technician for some tips.

Make sure there aren’t any obstructions too close to the air conditioner. If it’s an outside unit, make sure any vegetation is well away from the equipment so it doesn’t hinder the operation. Outdoor units also work best when they are shaded — the shade keeps them cool and makes for more efficient cooling of the air. Make sure any registers inside are free from clutter, as well.

Check — or have us check — your ductwork for any cracks and flaws. Family Danz technicians will also professionally clean those ducts, a process that will pay for itself in energy savings and greater efficiency in just a short time. Make sure the ductwork is properly insulated and taped, and while you are at it check your attic insulation, because it not only keeps the heat in during the winter but also keeps the heat out during the summer.

We’ve talked about programmable thermostats and ceiling fans recently, and both are great additions to maximize your air conditioning and minimize your dollars spent on cooling. Make sure to always turn off lights when not in use, draw your curtains or drapes during the day so you don’t get the heat of the sun coming in, and limit the use of any heat-producing appliances during the day if possible.

At Family Danz, your comfort is of paramount concern to us. If you ever have any questions about keeping cool during the summer, or staying warm during the winter, give us a call!
