Central Air Versus Window Units

If memories of the sweltering summer last year have you looking into installing a new air conditioning system, but you aren’t really sure what you need, Family Danz Heating & Cooling is here to help. We sell, install, and service AC systems throughout the Capital District of New York State, including Troy, Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga, and the surrounding region, and we will assist you in choosing the perfect AC to keep you cool and comfortable all summer long.

There are two basic choices when deciding on AC for the home or office: single-room units, or a central air system that cools throughout the structure. The single-room units traditionally mount in a window and are those heavy, steel boxes operated by a thermostat, a condenser, an evaporator, and fans. Central air units have a larger housing with a condenser that sets on the roof or in the backyard, with pipes running coolant indoors to an air handler, usually near the furnace. The air handler then blows that cool air throughout a system of ducts and into individual rooms.

The energy efficiency of a window unit is less than the central AC, mainly because central air conditioners work with a greater range of speeds. Air conditioners remove moisture as well as lower air temperature, and central air units with variable speed settings can condition a larger amount of air, creating a better dehumidifying factor. Central air is also quieter to run and less obtrusive to the home or office because most of its machinery is outside.

Central air conditioners, on the other hand, also can have a loss of cooled air through the fittings of the ducts. This can decrease the efficiency of the central air unit by some 30 percent.

Window units give you total control over the settings in each room. If only a single room is occupied at night, cooling that one room compared to the whole house is a big money savings.

Both AC systems have their pluses and minuses, so it really comes down to finding what is right for your own situation. At Family Danz, we’ve had more than 30 years of experience in all kinds of HVAC equipment, so let us put those three decades of service to work for you. We will be glad to help you make the choice between central air and window-mount AC systems that are just right for wherever you need them.
