Furnace Failure Warning Signs

Every homeowner will someday face the prospect of having to replace the furnace. Knowing when to do so can be a tough choice to make, so we at Family Danz Heating & Cooling want to help you make an educated decision.  If the furnace is running, but not really running the way it used to, it’s probably time to give us a call. We service heating systems throughout the Capital District of New York State, and whether you need a new furnace, or simply a bit of repair to the old system, no call for help is unimportant to us.

To make the decision to turn to our professionals even easier for you, here are several warning signs to watch out for in your heating system. You can check this out yourself in the privacy of your own home, and the sooner the better.

Today’s furnaces last around 20 years, so if yours is close to that age or significantly older, it’s time to start shopping. Don’t wait until the coldest day of winter when it becomes an emergency. It’s a lot more pleasurable to shop at your leisure than to scramble in the dead of winter.

Are you adjusting your thermostat more often than usual and still not feeling comfortable? If the air throughout the home is not a uniform comfortable temperature, or if the furnace blows out cold air or starts making funny noises, then something in your heating system is not working as well as it should be.

The air quality in the home will start to suffer from an ailing furnace, so if the air is starting to feel stuffy, stale, or dusty you likely have a problem. Physical symptoms will include dry skin, scratchy throats, and excessive static shocks. You might even feel the detrimental effects of carbon monoxide poisoning from an old heating system — including flu-like symptoms of disorientation and nausea — and then you should immediate go to fresh air. This is nothing to ignore, because carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal.

As the furnace gets older, the parts will start to wear out. You might replace one part only to have another die shortly thereafter. And as a furnace gets older and newer models are introduced, parts for that old dinosaur will be harder — and more expensive — to get. Those bandages can be more costly than replacing the furnace in the long run, because you’ll still have a decades-old model with some new parts.

Your energy bills will go up as the furnace loses its efficiency with its age. Another way a new furnace will help pay some of the cost of its purchase.

At Family Danz Heating & Cooling, we get calls constantly from people throughout the Capital District who are unsure if they really have a problem, and some of them admit feeling a bit leery of calling for help. But we guarantee you — none of those callers should feel apprehensive about making that call. We are here to share our knowledge and experience with you, and we are glad to be of service.
